A year ago you may not have known much about Virtual Reality. With the year that was, you may well have tried a VR game, or perhaps your nephew or daughter has an Oculus and you have walked a plank or hit some musical beats. But have you watched a VR Film yet – a really good one? If not, now is your chance and without the need for a VR headset. For the third year Carlow Arts Festival is bringing VR Cinema to audiences all around the country, and this year you can enjoy it from the comfort of your own home. VR is not just a powerful and immersive medium for games, VR Films can transport you literally anywhere and provide you with a sense of intimacy and presence not possible with any other storytelling medium.
This year our films will bring you through a multitude of perspectives, to the edge of existence and back again.
Fall through an enormous structure made from words, drawings and stories in Chalkroom by Laurie Anderson and Hsin-Chien Huang, experience teenage feistiness with Lupe, played by Rosario Dawson in the stunningly animated punk adventure Battlescar and Kowloon Forest brings us to Hong Kong where we get up close and personal with 5 strangers. Your Spiritual Temple Sucks take us to the Afterworld, a place that represents one’s destiny where Mr Chang summons his guardian, The Thunder God, to help him with his real life problems. For fine arts lovers, in (Hi)Story of a Painting, we bring you on a journey into the story behind La Grande Jatte, an iconic painting by Georges Seurat – a fascinating tale of how Georges went from underdog to world-renowned artist. For documentary lovers, Common Ground explores the notorious Aylesbury Estate, home to thousands of South Londoners, and a concrete monument to the history and legacy of social housing in the UK. And for kids, we are whisking them away to lands fantastical In the Land of the Flabby Schnook where a sister brings her brother into a succession of dreamlike tableaux where everything comes alive and through which her little brother learns to confront his fears.
