“Asking a black person about racism, demanding someone speaks about it, can be harsh, sometimes as harsh as racism itself”
This work emerged from thoughts on the relationships within a dance group – with a director and dancers that come from very different social and cultural backgrounds and who reflect a Brazil of enormous inequalities. While showing their performance aCORdo, they talk about their work and how their lives have been affected by Bolsonaro’s fascist politics, COVID-19, and more. The invitation to talk about Brazil, this surreal giant – sad and complex, forced the group to face the tensions and distortions of history. Discussing issues that have permeated their working processes, they reveal that they have been tracing a narrative about Brazil, by connecting their performance aCORdo to Bolsonaro’s fascist policy and COVID-19, as well as other issues including race.
